The Architect's Apprentice

architectsapp.jpg (30800 bytes)The Architect's Apprentice
By Gary Schwarzman

After his classic cutter became unfit for ocean sailing, the author decided to follow his dream and have a new custom-designed sailboat built out of wood. The experiences that follow make a story as interesting as any sailing yarn. With clarity, warmth and humor he describes the beauty of a naval architect's drawings, then the glue and sawdust as those plans generate the structure of a boat.

This is the very real story of ordinary people who depend on capable professionals, but who also contribute their own values, ingenuity and hard work. For those who may have dreamed of building their own yachts, this is how it works, and how it can be accomplished at no greater cost than the off-the-shelf price of a production sailboat.

An appendix with lots of practical information also contains the lines drawings of the author's new sailboat, ANASAZI, that were produced by the noted naval architect Chuck Paine.

"This well-organized book will be helpful to anyone considering custom boatbuilding." SAIL Magazine

Excerpts from The Architect's Apprentice:
Having cruised on sailboats over a twenty-year period we had no lack of opinions about the characteristics we wanted in a boat. Writing them down came easily. We even had a fair sense of the trade-off decisions to be made. We incorporated most of our old ideas and invented quite a few new ones. Some of these ideas were actually good. Some sounded sensible but betrayed our innocence. Some were damned foolish.

Our image of voyaging and of ourselves as cruising sailors, initially based on reading and imagination, gradually changed as we gained our own experience. From the day-to-day incidents of living aboard and sailing, from our minor successes and minor catastrophes, we became more knowledgeable and more opinionated on matters of boat design, construction, and outfitting. All of these thoughts would later generate the concepts for the design of ANASAZI. If such a collection of experiences and opinions can be called a philosophy, then we developed a cruising philosophy.
